It never ceases to amaze me how our country comes together in a time of need. In light of the tragedy last week, there has been an out pour of support for Newtown, CT from across the country (and world). It’s times like these when we feel helpless; we want to DO something but we don’t know what.
I, like so many of you, wanted to help in some way and went searching for something I can do to benefit the Newtown community and honor those who have passed. If you too are asking how you can get involved, I have compiled a list of 5 small things you can do that will make a big impact.
1. Winter Wonderland Snowflakes
When the children of Sandy Hook Elementary go back to school, in a new building, the National Parent Teacher Association wants them to be greeted by a winter wonderland. Parent-volunteers are working to ensure that the entire school is decorated with as many unique snowflakes as possible.
You can help by making snowflakes and sending them to Connecticut PTSA by January 12.

2. Volunteer
Make an impact in the the lives of the children in your community by volunteering at your local school or community center.
3. Walk or Take a Moment of Silence
Find other people in your community who are pledging to walk for 27 minutes on Friday 12/21 at 9:30 a.m. or coordinate with your office/school to take a moment of silence on Friday 12/21 at 9:30 a.m.to remember those we lost.
4. 26 Acts
It’s a viral campaign prompted by a tweet Ann Curry sent out suggesting folks do 26 “Acts of Kindness” to honor the 26 victims of the shooting. One act for each angel heaven gained on Friday.
Are you in?
See what others are doing and inspire others by tweeting your acts and labeling them with the hashtag #26acts.
5. Write a post
If you have a blog, write about a cookie recipe or craft and include a tribute to the victims. You can find other people’s blog post through the Twitter hashtag #BloggersForSandyHook. Learn more here.
I plan to take part in each of the ideas above. Are you showing your support for Newtown in another way? Comment below.
