Since moving to the city about seven years ago, black has become my safety color when it comes to pulling together an outfit. When I lack fashion inspiration or need a little confidence, I always look to a pair of jeans, black booties and my go to black top. Simple and effortless, but always chic!
Back in Connecticut I don’t think I even owned a black cardigan, let alone a full closet full of dark hued apparel. And although black is a closet color staple, I have attribute my affinity for this dark monochromatic look less to my fashion sense and more to my college roommate and best friend, A. As a native of the NY borough Staten Island, A always exuded a certain kind of kick-ass, cool. If you know someone like A, then you know exactly what I’m talking about. I distinctly remember when A and I first moved in together, I was stunned at the contrast of our open faced dorm room closets. Mine, bright and colorful and A’s dark and mysterious.
Since A is the strongest person, I subconsciously began pulling in some of her fashion staples when I need a little extra kick of confidence or want to exude some of her kick-ass cool. Black leather pants, a gray tee and a black jacket just scream A. Plus a little sparkly jewelry and a pop of print pull a little of my own personality into the look.
