I absolutely adore statement necklaces. Whether I am dressing up a tee and jeans or adding some sparkle to a simple shift, fun, colorful necklaces are the perfect solution.
In general I try to stick to statement necklaces with a longer chain because it is easy to adjust to a short style. Unfortunately, more often than not, my necklace is still not the right length to wear with the outfit I have planned. That’s where my latest invention (slight exaggeration) comes into play!
I’ve learned a little trick that will allow you to lengthen the chain on your statement necklaces and turn you favorite baubles into the perfect size!
Basically, I’ve created a chain extender using a piece of chain and a clasp that I can add to the end of any statement necklace for a little length. It was really easy, took about two minutes and cost less than a dollar to create.
Step One: Go to your local bead shop or craft store to pick up your supplies. You will need a chain (preferably in the color, size and style of your necklace’s chain), a clasp (in the same color and size of your chain) and a pair of pliers.
*I went to The Pear Tree, previously seen here, and I was able to use their tools and only paid 20 cents for the clasp and about 75 cents for the chain. Also note that while the size and color of your chain should match your necklace, the chain extender will be in back of your neck so it does not need to be a perfect match.
Step Two: Trim the chain to be the appropriate size for your extender, about two inches.
Step: Three: Open the clasp using the pliers, place one end of the chain in the clasp and close the clasp using the pliers (see below).
Step Four: Attach each end of the chain extender to your necklaces by lining up the necklace clasp to the end of the extender and the extender clasp to the end of the necklace (see below).
And viola, that’s it! You can now easily adjust the size of all of you statement necklaces to fit your fashion needs!
