One craft that I can remember doing ever since elementary school is making paper snowflakes. We made them in all different shapes, sizes and colors– no two were ever alike!
When the children of Sandy Hook Elementary go back to school in January, the National Parent Teacher Association wants them to be greeted by a winter wonderland and a group of volunteers is working to cover the new building in homemade snowflakes.
I heard about this effort a few days ago and was happy to get involved! This craft is great to do with young children and I plan on teaching my little brother how to make paper snowflakes when I go home for the holidays!
You can really take this project in any direction you want, add some glitter and get fancy or keep it simple and sweet. No matter how you decorate your snowflake the directions below offer a good starting point!
You will need:
- White paper (you can also use coffee filters or colored paper)
- Scissors
- Glitter, markers, pom poms and any other decorations that you want to add!
Instructions:
1. Fold a piece of paper diagonally in half so that about 2 inches of paper are left over. Cut off the excess paper so that you have a square piece of paper.
2. Continue to fold the piece of paper in half diagonally as may times as you want.
3. Begin to cut around the edges of the paper. Be creative and have fun!
4. Unfold the paper and lay flat!
5. Ta da! You made a paper snowflake!
