Things are going great in the new apartment! Everything is coming together and it really feels like home. We’ve been cooking most nights and exploring the new neighborhood on others. While the kitchen is still a bit small, J and I have begun to find a rhythm and manage to only knock into each other about half as much now!
Other than cooking and working, things have been pretty low key. So when family came into town this past weekend, I was very excited to see them, show them the new place and do some fun things throughout the city!
Sunday morning J and I attempted to make Almond Meal Blueberry Pancakes as a treat! I could barely contain my excitement as images of pancake towers and maple syrup clouded my thoughts all morning. Since we’ve had great luck with previous recipes from our Everyday Paleo cookbook, I was sure this recipe wouldn’t disappoint. Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned and we ended up with Almond Meal Blueberry mush instead of pancakes. I’m going to attribute this to being rushed and excited about the arrival of my family and not our cooking skills. We ended up throwing out the mush and opted for coffee for breakfast instead. I still await the morning of pancake bliss and am still plagued by visions of fluffy golden pancakes drizzled in maple syrup. I was able to salvage a good portion of the batter (no way I was throwing that all out after how much it cost!) and for now it is in the fridge waiting for us to try again later this week!
When my family arrived, we started off the weekend with a trip to SoWa Open Market, in the south end of Boston. We had a blast! There were a ton of local vendors who were selling everything from fruits and vegetables to artwork and jewelry. I tried to steer clear of the jewelry and crafts this time, since I emptied my wallet during our last trip, and instead focused on getting some locally grown produce at a great price! We also picked up delicious, home made salsa which I can’t wait to try on our tacos tonight!
Our trip to SoWa would’t have been complete without testing some of the food trucks that congregate in the lot! In an effort to stay as Paleo as possible (APAP) J and I opted for Barbacoa de Costilla and Carnitas Michoacan from The Taco Truck. It was both delicious and affordable!
After lunch we took a drive over to the The Arnold Arboretum where we spent the afternoon walking through the trails and playing an intense game of soccer. I hate to admit that my six year old brother and my mother beat J and I – they are fierce competitors!
The next day, with J at work, my family and I took on Boston and went for a Duck Tour! This is something I’ve wanted to do ever since moving to the city five years ago, and I was thrilled to get the chance to share the experience with my family.
I would recommend a Duck Tour for tourists and Boston natives alike. We traveled through the city, learning about its history, and quaking at pedestrians. (I even bought Nick the duck lips that quack!– I’m sure my mom wants to kill me)
After the tour, we spent the afternoon in the Public Garden and Boston Garden enjoying the beautiful day. The whole weekend was great because I love spending time with the people I love. I wish I got to see them more often.

And now a recipe!
One of my favorite go to Paleo recipes is chicken piccata. The recipe is simple, requires few ingredients and clean-up is a snap since everything is done in one pan. J and I have even taken our own twist on the Everday Paleo chicken piccata recipe by adding an almond flour or coconut flour breading.
