Did you know that you can use pureed dates as a substitute for maple syrup, honey or sugar?
Unlike sugar and honey, dates are full of fiber which slows down the absorption of sugar to your liver helping to regulate how your insulin responds. Fiber also fills you up faster.
Not unlike figs, dates are also wonderful for the stomach, bones and blood. They are rich in minerals like calcium, iron, phosphorus, copper and manganese, and help to promote bowel regularity.
Last but not least, the natural sugar constitution in dates makes them an energetic food that helps us move and boosts our metabolism.
Date puree, also commonly referred to as date paste, date honey or date butter, not only makes an excellent natural sweetener in Paleo baked goods. This recipe also makes a delicious snack or spread!
Other fruits, such as figs, apple, apricots or raisins can also be turned into natural sweeteners by following the recipe below! Use your own judgment and care in substituting fruit puree for other sweeteners, and note that results may differ slightly from the original recipe.
- 1 cup pitted dates, soaked
- ¼ cup hot water
- Place dates and hot water in a blender and blend until a thick paste forms
- Add more hot water, as needed
