By now you have probably heard or, or maybe even tried bulletproof coffee. In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, let me give you the back story. Dave Asprey, founder of The Bulletproof Executive, created this recipe for “the best cup of coffee on earth” by adding butter and oil to his everyday cup of joe. Dave claims that drinking bulletproof coffee will lead to more energy, better focus, and improved health. So obviously I tried it.
You all know I love a good cup of coffee – add a tablespoon of butter and, well, yum!
I don’t have a cup of bulletproof coffee everyday, nor do I suggest completely replacing breakfast with a cup of coffee. However if you are looking for an alternative to those popular, blended, whipped cream-on-top coffee drinks, this recipe could be for you. There has been a lot of debate around bulletproof coffee, whether the stuff works and if it is even deemed healthy. I’ve done my share of research and if you eat a balanced and stay active, adding bulletproof coffee is perfectly acceptable – plus it might give you a bit more energy than your usual morning cup.
Before you go powering up the blender, I want to leave you with a few brief notes about the recipe. First, Dave suggests using coffee brewed with low-toxin beans (like Bulletproof Upgraded Coffee). This is not a requirement so I would try bulletproof with your preferred coffee first, before spending the money on the upgrade. Second, you DO need to use grass-fed unsalted butter, don’t substitute margarine or anything else as this will defeat the purpose.
- 8 oz coffee
- 1-2 tbsp unsalted grass-fed butter (I use Kerrygold)
- 2 tbsp MCT oil (can be substituted with coconut oil)
- Combine all ingredients in a high-powered blender. It's ready when there is a creamy, foamy top to the mixture
- Add a dash of cinnamon, vanilla, dark chocolate for extra flavor
